In the late 1980s three Gibraltarians recognised the need for there to be a “home from home” in the UK which other Gibraltarians requiring medical treatment could utilise. Those three Gibraltarians, Peter Caetano, Sir Joe Bossano and Charlie Tilbury therefore went about making this idea into a reality and successfully created ‘Calpe House’.
Over the course of 30 years the Calpe House venue at Princes Square had serviced over 5000 patients, all of whom were provided with a room (free of charge) to utilise throughout their treatment.
In July 2018 Sir Joe Bossano formally opened the new Calpe House in Norfolk Square, Paddington. Both corporate sponsors and the financial help of HMGOG ensured that this modern and improved venue would become a reality for Gibraltarian patients. The new premises are a huge improvement on the previous facility, with every room being en suite, having its own TV, and the vast majority having their own kitchenette. There are 27 double rooms and 10 single rooms, totalling 64 beds; an increase of 37 beds from the previous venue.
The Charity’s Chairman, Albert Poggio, praised the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and his Government for the stalwart support they had consistently provided, and continue to provide in the context of the new Calpe House.
